Development Wheel (DEW) is a non-profit development organization founded in 1996 by a few development professionals and researchers to promote self-help poverty alleviation initiatives of the poorest households in Bangladesh. The main focus of the organization is to work for the promotion of the sustainable livelihoods for small scale Agriculture and Arts and Crafts sector producers in Bangladesh through facilitating the development of small enterprises with an aim to generate sustainable self-employment opportunities for under-privileged rural and urban people. Besides, DEW is also active in the fields of climate change and environment, livelihoods security, agricultural promotion, gender issues and women empowerment, human rights and good governance in partnership and collaboration with different international and national organizations.

DEW is dedicated to improving livelihoods security of the poor segments of the society in Bangladesh through increasing their participation (particularly women) in small scale economic activities by creating the provision of a range of business and life skills for them.

Professor Dr. Ainoon Naher is one of the founding members of Development Wheel (DEW).

She is a Professor of anthropology at Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. A member of the first cohort of anthropology graduates from Jahangirnagar University, which established the first department of anthropology in Bangladesh in 1985, she went on to receive an M.A. in Anthropology with distinction from University of Sussex, UK and PhD in Anthropology, magna cum laude, from the South Asian Institute, University of Heidelberg, Germany. Her research interests include gender, Islam, development, ethnicity and identity politics. She is the author of Gender, Religion and Development in Rural Bangladesh (VDM Verlag, Germany, 2008), a book based on her PhD dissertation, and several published articles.

Abdullah Al Mahbubur Rashid
Vice Chairman of Development Wheel (DEW)

Abdullah Al Mahbubur Rashid is the Vice Chairman of Development Wheel (DEW) executive committee. Before being elected Vice Chairman of the organization, he served as a civil servant of Bangladesh Government. He had a long successful career in Postal Service and retired as Postmaster General of Bangladesh. He did his graduation from Dhaka University and joined government service in 1989. 

He has got passion for reading books. He loves to write creative writings and publish them in chronicles, newspapers, magazines. Apart from that, he is a person of social obligations and very enthusiastic to contribute his experience and effort to ensure justice for marginal low income section of the society.

Throughout his professional career Mr. Shah gathered with him more than 35 years of diverse experience working with different national and international development organizations with strong strategic leadership skills in directing program staff as well as mobilizing producers in the sector of agriculture and crafts. Planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of variety of development projects/programmes and networks, civil society organizations/platforms towards alternative development initiatives, facilitation skills in creating linkage and collaboration across the country and region on common issues of concerns, critical engagement skills with the government and fund- raising and relationship.

In 1996, based on his diverse experience, knowledge and vision, he founded a national non-profit charity Development Wheel (www.dew.org.bd) and in 2016 a sister concern Certified Guaranteed Fair trade Social Enterprise called DEW Crafts (www.dewcrafts.com). DEW’s principal aim is to work for marginalized and hardcore poor communities in our country in achieving DEW’s core vision “to have a society where all people enjoy equal rights and equitable access to employment and adequate resources necessary for livelihood and live in dignity.”

Mr. Shah completed his graduation and post-graduation in Sociology from the University of Dhaka in 1986. His areas of interests include Fair Trade, Sustainable livelihoods, Agriculture, Human Rights and Good Governance, Women empowerment and Climate change & environment. He is an active member of many different national and international development networks and organizations such as WFTO, WFTO Asia (Ex. Board Secretary and Director), UNCCD-Country Focal, UN Environment Programme, Global Environment Facility’s-GEF, Green Climate Fund, Advisor World Accountable Society, INBER-Fellow, AWED, ICSFD, WFDA, Home Net South Asia, Climate Action Network in South Asia-CANSA, IAVE, Ecota Fair Trade Forum (Ex. Board Chair and present vice chair), Catalyst, Market Development Forum-MDF, Coalition for the Urban Poor-CUP, ADAB (Central Member), We Can, CSRL, My Rights, AFON etc. As an active member of these networks, he has participated many national and international conferences, meetings, seminars, workshops and also has traveled more than thirty five countries around the globe.

Mr. Lutful Kabir
Treasurer of the Board

Mr. Lutful Kabir was the immediate past Chairman of the DEW Executive Committee from 2018-2022 and now he is the Treasurer of the Board.

Mr. Lutful Kabir is an individual development consultant now, he worked in the development sector around 35 years and his contribution in this sector is very significant. Most of his development experiences with the small and cottage industries corporation, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), USAID, CIDA and GIZ. Most of his of his development career he worked for GIZ and he was the International Director of GIZ Bangladesh office. He implemented many development and consultancy projects in Bangladesh on behalf of the GIZ and other organizations.

Mr. Kabir completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management (PGDIM) from Bangladesh Management Development Centre (BMDC), Bangladesh. He completed his Master of Metallurgy from the University of Sheffield, UK. Before that he completed his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Karachi, Pakistan.

Mrs. Mosuda Banu Rotna
Executive Committee Member of DEW

Mrs. Mosuda Banu Rotna is a feminist leader and one of the Executive Committee member of Development Wheel (DEW). She is the Executive Director of a national level charity called “Grom Bikash Shahoyok Shongstha" which is a sustainable Centre for the disable children in Norshingdi villoge. She also established an inclusive school named "shondipown", in 2003 she established an inclusive orphan program called “Alokito Bhubon" for the girl children. As a senior development professional she successfully implemented many development project and programmes.

Mosudo Banu Rotna completed her Honors degree on Mathematics from Dhaka University in 1977. She is associated with different national and international development organizations and networks and leading many of them.

Mrs. Selima Akhtar
Executive Committee Member of DEW

Mrs. Selima Akhtar is one of the Executive Committee members of Development Wheel (DEW). She is a long days experienced development professional and the Facilitator of the WE programme and senior consultant in RBC. She is over 26 years’ experience in the RMG sector in Bangladesh. Previously she worked with UNICEF and the ILO and the Bangladesh government, specializes in communication, team working and rout cause analysis.

To make a change in the workers life and building a sustainable work place is her intention for which she always try to work in the ground where she can have dialogue between workers and management in the RMG sector. Beside that she get an opportunity to work for the rural workers in the agriculture sector. This is also one of the key areas where she have interest to work to build their capacity on quality production and market for fair price for their products.

Mrs. Selima completed her Honors and Masters from the department of Management, University of Dhaka and Post-graduation diploma from the Development and Planning Academy for planning & Development. She is an active members of the different national and international professional networks and association.

Barrister Ali Reza Mohammad SUZAUDDAWLA (Sohan)
Legal Advisor of Development Wheel (DEW)

Barrister Ali Reza Mohammad SUZAUDDAWLA (Sohan) is one of the Executive Committee member and Legal Advisor of Development Wheel (DEW). By profession he is a layer and practicing in the Bangladesh Supreme Court.

Mr. Ali Reza is also contributing a lot in the development sector in the UK and Bangladesh. Throughout his professional career in many different National and International development organizations for almost three decades, he has gained experience in organizing, planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of variety of development projects/programmes and networks. He worked for BRAC, CARE-Bangladesh, Terre Das Hommes France, ILO and UNDP-Bangladesh for around 10 years. He started his career as development worker from the entry-level position at the grassroots level to different managerial positions. In 1996, with his experience and visions, and the support from a group of dedicated development professionals and nationally and internationally reputed researchers, he founded a national non-profit charity organization Development Wheel (DEW) and in 2016 a certified GUARANTEED Fair trade Social Enterprise called DEW Crafts (dewcrafts.com). DEW’s principal aim is to work for marginalized and hardcore poor communities in our country in achieving DEW’s core vision “to have a society where all people enjoy equal rights and equitable access to employment and adequate resources necessary for livelihood and live in dignity.”
